Freeway honors Nick Joaquin and Cesar Legaspi
The back-to-back collection launch was held on May 31, 2017 at the Bulwagang Juan Luna Main Gallery of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Pasay City as part of Nick Joaquin’s and Cesar Legaspi’s Birth Centennial Celebration. The night served as an intimate celebration of art, fashion, and literature as it was attended by art enthusiasts, critics, media, and the families and friends of both National Artists.
The event opened with an hour of socialization among the guests served with cocktails. They were invited to view the exhibits of both national artists in the venue. Aside from Legaspi’s exhibit in the event area is Nick Joaquin’s Exhibit at Pasilio Victor Edades at the 4th Floor Hallway where we can view his work and remnants of his life. They also had an exclusive Pop-up Shop preview of the #FreewayXJoaquin and #FreewayXLegaspi Collections for the Freeway National Artist Collectors’ Series. Guests not only got to know each other, but the two featured artists as well.
The show proper, lively hosted by Lexi Schulze, immediately proceeded with the highlight of the event: the fashion show of the two collections. The 49-piece dual collection featured works of both national artists. For Nick Joaquin, excerpts from his famous works and colorful blown glass florals were printed on modern silhouettes like the trendy off and cold shoulders, wardrobe classics such as loose blouses and shift dress in various necklines. For Cesar Legaspi, his popular paintings like Kargador were printed on loose blouses, off and cold shoulder, shift dresses, and jumpsuits in different necklines. The two collections, through music and lighting, gave the audience two different moods each, with Joaquin’s as more sunny and romantic and Legaspi’s as dark and dramatic. The fashion show was made possible by Freeway’s event sponsor, Zalora, who helped produce the show.
Following the fashion show is dramatic actress Cherie Gil who read the work of Nick Joaquin to the delight of the audience. It was followed by an interview portion with the special guests, namely Celeste Legaspi, singer and daughter of Cesar Legaspi, Bing Villegas, nephew-in-law of Nick Joaquin, and Charo Joaquin Villegas, niece of Nick Joaquin.
In line with Freeway’s advocacy to promote local art, winner from the recently concluded Art Bag Designing Contest, John Bermerjo, was awarded with the art bag printed with his winning design plus other prizes he won from the contest.
The whole event is said to be successful as it gave the audience a sense of appreciation towards our national treasures: fashion, art, and the artists behind it. Through the event, Freeway together with its partners CCP and Zalora were able to immortalize the creations of the national artists by turning their masterpieces into wearable art; an approach very timely with the modernity of society.
